Cessnock City Councilors and the NSW Department of State and Regional Development identified the site as potentially having state economic development significance.

1996

The Hunter Valley Wine Country Development team identified the site as having the greatest potential for industrial use within the Cessnock Goverment Area. Planning NSW saw the need for large industrial land outside Sydney.

june1998

Completion of University of Newcastle led study that recommended the area for large-scale industrial development due to its size, environmental character, and location.

march1999

the re-zoning application and supporting studies were lodged with Cessnock City Council.

march2002

Gazettal of the re-zoning of HEZ.

august2003

Work commences on the main spine road of HEZ. NSW Premier Bob Carr launches the Hunter Economic Zone. First Stage of 170 hectares is available for sale.

december2003

The Development Masterplan is completed.

2005

Valad Property Group appointed HEZ Development Manager.

2006

Stage 1 Road construction complete. Energy Australia Substation Civil Works Commenced.
